Seeing how much effort it took for Zack to speak made my tears fall instantly.
I had seen Zack in many different ways, always so spirited, but I had never seen him so weak.
"Don't cry, Maddie… Don't cry." Zack strained to lift his hand to wipe away my tears.
I held his hand tightly and wiped my tears on my sleeve.
Actually no, the clothes weren't mine. The coat was Chris'. He had pulled me out of the hotel when I was only wearing pajamas, but he had given me his coat once we were in the car.
I wanted to reject his offer, but I was wearing a camisole nightgown and felt too embarrassed for anyone to see me like that, so I had no choice but to put it on. I had been wearing it ever since.
"Okay, I won't cry." I lifted my face and forced a faint smile after wiping my tears.
Zack looked at me with gentleness and complication in his eyes, filling me with unease. I gripped his hand tighter and reassured him, "Zack, you'll be fine. You'll definitely be fine."
"I know myself best," Zack said weakly. His words were too soft to hear. Throughout his life, he had weathered so many storms and always remained calm and rational.
"Maddie, you look a lot like your mother," Zack suddenly pointed out.
His words reminded me of Emma, who was a stranger to me yet bore such a striking resemblance. Sadly, I never got to say a single word to her. She must now be happy in another world.
"My mom must have been beautiful too," I said with a smile.
Zack smiled faintly. "Yes, your mother was… very kind."
"Just like Bree, right?" I quickly added.
