Scarlett was crying heavily, tears and snot running down her face. She held his hand and begged for the last time. She asked Austin to plead with Jack. She looked very pitiful as she begged him not to send her on the plane.
However, when he thought of what she had done, Austin was a little indifferent. Her pleas were easier to ignore. He thought, 'How can someone be beautiful on the outside and corrupted on the inside? Her heart was simply terrible. It's no wonder that Mr. Fu would do such a cruel thing to her.'
Austin came to his senses and said seriously, "Mr. Fu, I got information that Scarlett's cousin is looking for her everywhere, and she's also threatening to—"
At this point, Tracy's voice can be heard from the other line, "Son, what kind of call is so important that you have to answer it right now? Say what you need to and finish that call. Come back here. The dishes on the table are getting cold."
"Almost done," Jack replied, but he didn't hear the rest of what Austin was saying.
He lowered his voice in case someone else overheard him. "Well, forget about her cousin. I don't think she can stir up any trouble. I have something important to do here. I have to hang up."
After hanging up, Jack went back to the table. Rachel put down her chopsticks and wiped her mouth as soon as he sat down. "I'm full."
Jonathan pointed at the dishes. "But you haven't eaten much."
"I don't eat a lot these days." Rachel stood up and smiled. "I want to go out for a walk before dawn. Enjoy your meal."
She was lying about wanting to take a walk. She just didn't want to interact with them and avoid intimacy with Jack.
"Then I'll go with you." Jack also stood up.
Rachel wanted to escape so she said, "No, thanks. You haven't had dinner yet. Just continue eating with your parents. I can handle going out for a walk alone."
"No way! It's too dangerous for you to be alone, " said Jonathan.
"That's right. He can eat dinner after you finish your walk, it's still early. I'll ask Julie later to heat up the dishes that Jack likes,"
Tracy echoed, leaving no chance for Rachel to refuse. She was trapped so she agreed in a low voice, "Okay."
For the past two days, the weather hadn't been good in Ninwell City. The sky was a little dark and you wouldn't see the moon if you looked up. It was nowhere to be found. Even the stars were hiding. There wasn't even a trace of starlight in the dark sky.
Perhaps because of the coming New Year, the path outside the villa, in contrast, made the night as bright as day. All kinds of lanterns illuminated the surroundings and made their shadows long.
Rachel wanted to reach for a lantern, but she couldn't. When she was about to give up, Jack extended his arms and took the lantern off its place. He was smiling when he handed it to her. "Do you like this?"
She shook her head in denial. She didn't take it, nor did she respond to his question.
A trace of disappointment flashed through Jack's eyes, but he stood his ground. He didn't let go and played with it for a while. Still smiling, he said, "If you like it, I'll hang lanterns in our yard. You can look at them whenever you sit in the living room."
Seeing the faint smile on his lips and the twinkle in his eyes, Rachel felt a slight pain in her heart. She blurted out, "Jack, we're destined to be separated. You don't have to do such things for me anymore."
Jack's earlier unchanging smile froze all of a sudden. He stared at her and finally said, "Rachel, it's my business whether I do these things or not. I know we're separating. You don't have to remind me all the time." His voice also became a little cold at that statement.
Looking down at his long shadow on the ground, Rachel pursed her lips. The reminder was honestly more for herself instead of him.
Jack hung the lantern back in its place. He held her hand. His voice now somewhat stern and more resolved. "As of this moment, we're still husband and wife. We're still together so we should behave like a couple. Let's talk about it later."
Rachel finally raised her head and looked at him sadly. She smiled silently and asked, "But what about her?"
Even if they just got together for a short time, Rachel couldn't calm herself down. She couldn't bear the fact that the man beside her had another woman all this time.
Or the fact that another woman could threaten her and the baby's safety at any time.
Jack took a while to respond. He squared his shoulders and assured her resolutely, "Don't worry. She won't bother us again. Similar incidents won't happen again."
Rachel's heart sank. She looked at him in surprise and asked, "What happened to her?"
"She left Ninwell City." Jack smiled faintly. He wanted to change the topic, so he pointed to a small park in front of them. "I think it's very vibrant there. Let's go and have a look."
"Okay."
Rachel let him hold her hand as they slowly walked forward.
She had gone through this road many times, but she was always alone or by herself. This was her first time to be here with him, wasn't it? Despite that, she still felt a little relieved.
They returned home and saw that Jonathan and Tracy already left. Julie, on the other hand, was busy in the kitchen.
Rachel was about to go back to her room when she was stopped by Jack. He lightly pushed her back down on the sofa. She frowned at this request. "I want to go back to my room. Why are you holding me like this?"
