Byron snapped back to reality and looked at his daughter and son walking ahead of him.
"You guys wait for me in the car," he said.
"Yeah." Athena nodded.
There were too many people at Mia's school gate.
Athena and Byron went together to pick up the kids after school, and there were already many people crowding around.
It was not suitable to stay there and make a phone call.
It was much better here. Here were hardly any people.
Byron walked to the side. He didn't have the number for the child, only WhatsApp, so he dialed through WhatsApp.
It rang for a long time.
There was no answer on the other side.
Just as Byron thought the person wouldn't answer.
The voice of the boy came from the other side.
"Mr. Crawford."
"Thank goodness, I thought you wouldn't answer." Byron breathed a sigh of relief. "How are you today? Is your injury getting better? No one is bothering you anymore, right?"
"She left. Now I'm with my grandmother." The boy's voice seemed to have a bad signal, crackling.
Byron could hear his disappointment and sadness.
Which child wouldn't feel lost and sad after being abandoned by their mother?
"The injury has gotten better. My grandmother gave me medicine. Mr. Crawford, don't worry about me."
"How can I not worry?" Byron thought of what he saw just now. "When I picked up my daughter from school just now, I had a feeling and thought I saw you in the crowd."
"I'm sorry for making you worry. When I come back to Girard City, I will come and see you," the boy said sincerely.
Byron instinctively looked toward where the car was parked.
Athena stood by the car. When she saw him looking, she smiled and waved gently at him.
Byron softened his expression. "Good. When you come back, my wife and I will come and see you."
The boy said, "Okay."
The crackling noise on the other side suddenly became louder.
"Mr. Crawford, the signal is bad here. Let's make plans to meet when I go back..."
"Okay."
The boy hung up the phone.
Only then did Byron remember that he hadn't asked the boy's name.
"I'll ask next time we meet,"
Byron murmured, then he walked straight toward Athena.
"What did he say?" Athena asked.
"The person who hurt him is gone, and now he's with his grandmother. The old lady is good to him," Byron replied.
Athena saw that he was visibly relieved.
She pinched his arm.
