He had been closing his eyes to take a rest. Then, he opened them and stared at me motionlessly. "Would you?" he asked in a serious tone of voice.
I rolled my eyes at him and said, "Why not? There are many unexpected turns of events in life. Aaron never thought that he would fall in love with Yana and that she would eventually bear him a child. What's more, it never crossed his mind that Yana would marry another man a few years down the road. In life, nothing is ever carved in stone."
His eyes were still fixed on me. "What about you?" I asked. "Stop staring at me like that."
"I'd never let you go. I would not let you fall in love with another guy, much less marry him! Your hypothesis does not hold!" He was getting too serious. So, I held back from asking more questions.
I sighed in exasperation. "It's just a hypothesis... Can't you just answer my question? What's with all the fuss?" I was a little annoyed, and so turned away, refusing to talk to him.
As he leaned his chest against my back, I could feel his heartbeat. Then, he placed his huge palm on my belly and mumbled, "Arianna, we are in control of what happens in life most of the time. I don't know what lies in the future. But, as long as I' m alive, I will never let you ho. I don't believe in letting one go if I truly love her! I'm just a normal man. I won’t let you go, much less allow you to marry someone else. Please stop making such a hypothesis."
I felt much calmer as I listened to his heartbeat and regained my mental clarity. As I lay on the crook of his arm and fiddled with his slender fingers, I said, "Alright then. I won't make such a hypothesis anymore. Our family will have a happy life together once Anne recovers."
He hugged me and held me tightly in his arms. Now, I guessed I truly understood what bliss was. Bliss was to be able to hug the love of your life in the middle of the night... Everything would become wonderful.
"Hendrix, you..." As I sensed his movements, I was shocked and exclaimed, "What are you doing? I'm pregnant. We can't do that!"
He grabbed hold of my arms. Our eyes met. His gaze was deep and dark. "Arianna, when's the last time we got intimate?" he asked, sounding a little hoarse.
I was stunned. "But now is not the right time for me!" I muttered softly.
He bowed his head towards mine. I could feel his warm breath.
I did not dare to breathe or speak at that moment.
Soon after that, he took a deep breath. "Alright then, sleep tight," he said while nodding.
I heaved a sigh of relief when he loosened his grip. As I thought of what happened earlier in the day, I asked, "Has it been inconvenient to bring your phone to meetings recently?"
"Not really. What's the matter?"
"Oh," I replied. "It's nothing. I have been unable to reach you during office hours. I thought, perhaps you could not bring your phone to meetings."
He hugged me and said, "My office is near the conference room. So, I leave my phone in my office at times. I'll carry it along next time."
I beamed and said, "Alright."
