But they had been drinking tonight. Perhaps it was the alcohol, amplifying every emotional cell in their bodies. They say alcohol brings out the truth, and people deep in drink are prone to acting on impulse or emotion.
In that moment, they all felt like crying.
They happily shared the cake, clinking their glasses together. The four figures overlapped in the light of the overhead lamps. One moment they were huddled together in tears, the next they were bent over with laughter.
After a while, Maggie's phone rang. She fumbled for it, held it crookedly to her ear, and slurred, "Hello… yeah… The Tasting Room, second floor…"
Less than five minutes later, a handsome, clean-cut young man appeared at the door. Janina thought he looked so young she'd call him a boy, like a college student. His eyes immediately found Maggie, who was slumped over the table. He rushed to her side and put an arm around her shoulder. "How much did you drink?"
At the sound of his voice, Maggie groggily lifted her head. Staring at his criminally handsome face, she giggled at her friends. "Farley, my younger boyfriend. He's here to pick me up!"
Melody looked up and greeted Farley with a silly smile. "Hey, handsome, want a drink?" She stood up, stumbling as she tried to pour him a glass.
Farley quickly refused. "No, thank you, ladies. You're all drunk. I'm going to take Maggie home now. You should all get home soon, too."
Janina waved a hand. "You can take Maggie first."
That was all Farley needed to hear. He helped Maggie up and started leading her out. She hadn't had enough to drink yet and mumbled, "Drink… let's drink… I'm not leaving…"
