For convenience, they had placed the children in their small beds in the living room, allowing Janina and Grace a moment to eat lunch.
Just before they had laid them down, Janina had checked their foreheads. The temperature wasn’t high; although she didn’t use a thermometer, she estimated it was around 99°F.
She had thought it was a sign of improvement. She never imagined that just ten minutes later, their fevers would spike so violently.
Fairchild placed his fingers on Liam's and Joy's wrists to check their pulses, one with each hand. He glanced up and suddenly noticed an unfamiliar face in the house.
He immediately dropped his hands and shot a sharp, unfriendly look at Land. “Who are you?”
Startled at being called out so suddenly, Land flinched. She didn’t know who Fairchild was and assumed he was a relative of the Holt family.
Once she recovered, she broke into a smile. “I’m the housekeeper here.”
Janina and Grace exchanged a look, and then Janina introduced her to Fairchild.
“Fairchild, this is Land. Mom and Dad were getting exhausted with the kids, so I hired her to help out. She usually handles the housework. You’ll have to try her cooking later; she’s an amazing cook.”
Fairchild gave Land another long, deep look, said nothing, and then strode upstairs to his room.
Everyone was left speechless.
Ethan and Grace were about to go upstairs to ask Fairchild about Liam and Joy’s condition.
Janina quickly stopped her parents, giving their hands a slight, firm squeeze. “Mom, Dad, Fairchild is probably tired. I’ll go check on him.”
As she spoke, she glanced at Land, who was standing a short distance away, before her eyes returned to Grace and Ethan.
Her parents understood the unspoken message immediately.
Ethan waved a hand. “Alright then. While you’re at it, ask him what he wants for dinner so Land can prepare it.”
“Okay,” Janina said, and headed upstairs.
Once Janina was gone, Grace withdrew her gaze and turned to Land.
