Elena had it in her head that Maeve was interested in the guy.
"Jay Thompson. Junior year. Pre-med. Maeve—don't tell me you've got a thing for him?"
"You'd better drop that idea fast. See that girl, Leah? She and Jay go way back. They're tight."
"And Leah's got a nasty streak. Don't let the freshman thing fool you."
"At this school, any girl who talks to Jay Thompson for more than ten sentences ends up on Leah's hit list."
Maeve took it in, connecting the dots.
So this Jay Thompson… was that Jay the bullies kept name-dropping.
He looked the part—clean-cut, decent-looking, all bright-eyed and polished.
The only problem was the way his gaze drifted from girl to girl with easy, practiced charm, like he'd been getting away with it for years. He looked exactly like the kind of guy who left a trail of broken hearts behind him.
Maeve took a sip of her plum juice and snorted. "You're overthinking it. Why would I be interested in him?"
Elena agreed. No way Maeve would ignore a man like Mr. Andres for someone like Jay Thompson.
With a face and a little charm, Jay had been collecting naïve underclassmen like trophies since day one. Everyone could see it: Jay didn't even like Leah—he just never said it to her face.
Leah's dad was a heavyweight in the music world, and the Foster family still had to keep the Ford family happy. Jay played both sides—acting disgusted while still taking what he could get.
Elena didn't think much of men like that. Not even worth half a glance.
After a full day of classes, Maeve stopped by the restroom before leaving campus.
She'd just pulled her jeans back up when she heard someone pounding on a stall door outside.
"Hello? Open up! Hurry—someone's still in here!"
Maeve pushed the door open and stepped out to see a girl with a badly bruised, swollen face slapping at a locked restroom door like her life depended on it.
When she noticed Maeve appearing silently behind her, she jumped.
"Oh my God—I thought I was the only one in here."
It took Maeve a moment to place her.
