Divorce Failed My Wife's Secret Identities Shock the World novel Chapter 362

"Because I'm sick," Leah added, sharp and deliberate, "sick because certain people with money and connections and power decided to put their hands on me."

That last line was clearly meant for Maeve.

Before Mateo could even respond, Leah spun on her heel and stormed off.

Mateo looked at Maeve, equal parts tired and embarrassed. "Sorry you had to see that."

Maeve tipped her chin toward Leah's retreating figure. "Isn't she supposed to be on medical leave?"

Mateo gave a humorless snort. "The 'sick' part is fake. Stirring trouble is the whole point."

"Did you see how fast she ran? She's got the energy of a track star."

"And she's holding a grudge. She knows the school needs her, and she picked now to disappear."

Maeve lifted a brow. "I heard something about lyrics and composition?"

Mateo sighed like the weight of the world had landed on his shoulders. "Yeah."

"The intercollegiate games are coming up. Every school has to create its own ninety-second entrance song. It's tradition."

"Leah's dad is a big name in the music world. With a few calls, this would've been done yesterday."

"But you saw her attitude—she doesn't care about school pride. She just dumped it in our laps."

"Mr. Yates can't get anywhere with the Fords, so he sent me to negotiate."

"And Leah won't give me the time of day."

Mateo was starting to regret ever becoming student council president. It looked glamorous from the outside, but in reality it was endless stress, endless work, and playing referee between people who had no interest in being reasonable.

Maeve didn't want to get involved.

But Leah's "medical leave" was at least partially because of her—and that left a sour note of guilt.
