Maeve held her hand out to Sylvia. "Hand over your bag. I'll look through it myself."
As long as she wasn't snatching her compass, Sylvia was more than willing to cooperate.
She took out her compass and tossed the half-empty purse to Maeve.
Maeve didn't stand on ceremony. She unzipped the bag and, with pinpoint accuracy, pulled out a Mandrake the size of her palm.
Holding it up for everyone to see, Maeve said, "I want this."
Maeve's actions were incredibly deliberate.
Besides the Mandrake, there were several other valuable trinkets in the bag.
But Maeve ignored them all, going straight for the prize and picking out only the Mandrake.
Then, she tossed the bag back to a stunned Sylvia.
Sylvia caught her bag with a blank expression, and in a flash, everything clicked.
Her expression changed. "From the very beginning, you never wanted the compass. You were after this Mandrake, weren't you?"
Maeve beamed.
"You nailed it. This Mandrake was exactly what I wanted all along."
Maeve looked at her loot with deep affection.
"This ancient Mandrake is worth way more than that broken compass you've been protecting with your life."
Mandrakes were incredibly rare on the market, but one that was a thousand years old? That was practically a myth.
Even though this piece was only the size of a palm, it was more than enough for Maeve.
She was currently working on an experiment and was missing a single crucial ingredient: an ancient Mandrake.
Andres White and Quinn Hayes exchanged a look.
Both men were thinking the exact same thing: Maeve, that clever little devil, had successfully played everyone again.
Sylvia didn't know whether to be furious or speechless.
She had been praised as a prodigy by the elders since she was a kid, yet today she had been completely outplayed by this girl.
"What do you mean, work for free?"
Maeve pointed at the various energy-conducting artifacts scattered across the yard.
"Without these so-called positive energy artifacts amplifying the backlash of the dark energy, the nexus wouldn't have collapsed on its own."
Elijah was completely lost.
"Are you saying the energy grid we set up didn't improve the environment at all, but actually triggered a backlash?"
Maeve nodded seriously.
"Exactly."
Sylvia couldn't accept this.
"That completely contradicts mystic theory."
Quinn sauntered over with a grin, ready to drop some truth bombs on them.
