Divorce Failed My Wife's Secret Identities Shock the World novel Chapter 557

"Are they trying to kill me?" Subject 1152 asked the moment they reached the rooftop, not bothering to mince words.

The sunlight was bright and welcoming, but Maeve's heart felt incredibly heavy. Faced with his blunt question, she chose to remain silent.

Sensing her reluctance, 1152 let out a bitter, raspy laugh. "I've only got three days left to live, and they can't even stomach letting me have that?"

Maeve couldn't bear to tell him the brutal truth. The people orchestrating this didn't care about him; they just didn't want her passing the trial and joining the lab.

She pushed his wheelchair out into the sun. "I have a habit of overcomplicating things. Maybe Victor really was just having his assistant fetch supplies for Team D."

1152 scoffed. "I've been a human guinea pig in this hellhole for long enough to know exactly how terrifying dimethylmercury is. That assistant, Mila—she was being set up as the fall guy."

Maeve hadn't expected him to be so perceptive. "What makes you so sure she was being used?"

"When she walked over, she was holding four vials," 1152 explained calmly. "They all looked sealed at a glance, but the stopper on one of them was noticeably different. Like you said, dimethylmercury burns through hazmat suits. One tiny slip from a nervous assistant, and an 'accident' happens instantly."

His body might be failing, but his mind was sharp. "That girl looked like she just walked out of a university. No street smarts, no corporate survival skills. She blindly followed whatever her 'professor' ordered her to do. The perfect naive pawn. If anything went wrong, Victor would seamlessly shift all the blame onto her. I've seen these cheap corporate sabotage tricks for decades."

Maeve realized that Stetson Woods carried a lot of heavy history; someone without deep life experience wouldn't be this cynical.

He suddenly lowered his voice. "Are there any cameras out here?"
