Divorce Failed My Wife's Secret Identities Shock the World novel Chapter 558

As a candidate under evaluation, her security clearance was abysmally low—she could only move freely within Sub-Level 4. Even taking a patient to the roof for some fresh air required a signature from the logistics department.

Maeve carefully inspected the data chip. Based on her technical experience, it had been purposefully sabotaged before it was lost. A glaring fracture ran straight through its core.

If Stetson's account was accurate, the facility's frantic search for the chip meant the data on it was critically important. Most likely, someone in the lab had tried to permanently destroy the drive, but a sudden interruption caused it to go missing mid-sabotage, only to accidentally fall into Stetson's hands.

The First Archives operated entirely offline and were rigged with self-destruct protocols. To pull any data from there, one absolutely needed top-tier clearance. Earning that clearance was the real reason Maeve had been playing this elaborate game with Simon Grover.

"Mr. Woods, why are you giving this to me?" she asked.

Stetson never tried to hide his feelings around her. "Besides my late parents, you're the only person in this world who has ever shown me a shred of genuine care. I know that in your eyes, I'm just a pawn for your trial. But even so, what you've done for me as I approach the end of my life has earned my eternal gratitude."

His voice trembled slightly. "Miss Vance, I don't want to die. Even suffering through this agony, I want to fight to live. But surviving here just means going back to being their human guinea pig. I've watched fellow patients recover, only to be tossed right back into the experimental wringer. Those butchers don't stop until they've tortured a person to death."

Stetson wasn't completely blind to the bigger picture. He knew the research Lab C was conducting could potentially save humanity from terrible diseases. People like him were sacrificed so that millions of others could have a chance at life.

But human test subjects had dignity too. The contracts explicitly stated that upon recovery, they would be reunited with their families. The horrifying truth was that once you entered Lab C, you never left alive.
