The moment she stepped out of the elevator, Maeve Vance received a call from Parker Sterling, who was halfway across the world.
"Doesn't the Intelligent Competition start next month?"
Subject 1152's death had cast a dark cloud over Maeve's mood.
So, when Sterling nagged her over the phone about taking the Intelligent Competition seriously, her patience wore thin.
Sensing the irritation in her voice, Sterling asked, "Who was blind enough to piss you off this time?"
Maeve had been in a terrible mood.
But hearing Old Mr. Sterling's affectionate tone, the gloom suffocating her heart began to dissipate.
"No one pissed me off. I'm not that easily provoked."
"Sterling, it should be the middle of the night over there."
"Did you call me out of the blue just to remind me about the Intelligent Competition next month?"
Honestly, if Sterling hadn't reminded her, Maeve would have completely forgotten about it.
Sterling nagged like an anxious mother, "You better take this competition seriously. Don't let that bastard Renfield Yates make a fool out of us."
"I made a bet with him. If you lose, I have to hand over my position as principal."
Maeve scoffed. "Betting on something like this? Aren't you a little too old to be this childish?"
Sterling grumbled, "I just don't want that bastard to get the upper hand."
Maeve sighed in exasperation.
"Fine, fine. I'll take next month's competition seriously. As for whether you get to keep your job as principal, that's up to fate."
"Anything else? If not, I'm hanging up."
"You're not a young man anymore. Stop staying up late and go to bed."
She was about to hang up when Sterling stopped her.
"Maeve, I called you at this hour because I actually have official business."
"The higher-ups have assigned you a new mission. You're going to act as Pluto's deputy and assist him with a case."
Maeve was about to argue, but Sterling cut her off.
"I'll email you the mission details shortly."
"It's getting late, and I need to sleep. That's all, bye."
He hung up so fast that Maeve couldn't even react.
She cursed softly at her phone, "You slick old fox. Don't let me catch you, or I'll make you pay."
Years ago, Maeve had joined Red Gate under Sterling's recommendation to gain access to more resources.
Red Gate was an official, highly classified government department. Its members were few, but every single one of them had an extraordinary background.
To protect their identities, everyone used a unique codename.
They didn't know each other personally, nor did they know anyone's true identity in the real world.
As for that guy named Pluto, he was absolutely the biggest humiliation in Maeve's past.
She thought she would never have to deal with him again in this lifetime, yet Sterling was actually ordering her to be his deputy.
