It was already nine-thirty by the time Maeve returned to Azure Bay.
Surprisingly, Andres wasn't home yet.
Ella hurried over, taking Maeve's jacket as she took it off.
"Mr. Andres said he couldn't get through to your phone, so he asked me to let you know he has a business dinner tonight and might be back late."
Maeve just murmured an acknowledgment.
She pulled out her phone and checked, only to realize the battery had died again.
She went back to the bedroom to plug it in, then took a hot shower.
When she stepped out, she found Andres had returned at some point.
He sat silently in the single armchair, his legs crossed in a relaxed posture.
The dim, warm light of the bedroom cast shadows over his strikingly handsome face, making him look like a top-tier male model on a magazine cover. It was quite a seductive sight.
Maeve admired the man in front of her for a few seconds, treating him like a piece of fine art.
Then she withdrew her gaze, sat at the vanity, and began drying her wet hair with a towel.
Andres stood up, walked over, and wrapped his arms around her from behind.
The cold air he brought in from outside, mixed with the faint scent of alcohol and smoke, immediately invaded Maeve's senses.
"Stop it."
She had just showered, and she smelled of fragrant body wash—a sweet, intoxicating milky scent.
She didn't want it tainted by other odors.
Instead of letting go, Andres scooped her up into his arms and carried her straight to their bed.
Maeve struggled in his grip.
"I said stop it. My hair isn't even dry yet."
What was this man going crazy over now?
Ignoring her protests, Andres cupped the back of her head with his right hand and claimed her soft, jelly-like lips in a deep, consuming kiss.
The kiss left Maeve's body feeling weak, and a physical tension quickly began to build.
Just as she thought he was going to rip off her nightgown and take her right then and there, he abruptly pulled back.
"I wouldn't dare put spies around you," Andres said softly. "But I did station a few men at The Quiet Garden."
"It wasn't to monitor you, just to make sure the lab stayed secure from the shadows."
"So, the reason you were acting like a lunatic the second you walked in is because I brought a classmate to the house?" Maeve asked.
She rarely bothered to explain herself, but today she summoned a bit of extra patience.
"Daisy Duke. You've met her. She got on the wrong side of some people and was being bullied at school."
"If you dig into it, it's partly my fault."
"I want to help her, but not out of guilt. It's because she and her father have a real gift for horticulture."
"There's an empty plot at The Quiet Garden where I've been planning to grow medicinal herbs."
"That's the whole situation. You throwing a tantrum over something this petty is completely unnecessary."
Andres pulled her onto his lap, his expression turning dead serious.
"My mood has nothing to do with who you brought to The Quiet Garden."
"I went to a friend's reception tonight. Every single guest was paired up, while I was standing there alone."
