Orchestrated by Andres White, the corporate magnates eager to partner with Maeve gathered in Aethelburg. The only exception was the Grover family, whom Maeve had deliberately shut out. Declan Fulton, head of the Fulton Group, and Corbin Shaw, the second son of the Shaw Group—representing two of Aethelburg's three great families—were both in attendance.
Ever since seeing Maeve's exhibits at the tech expo, Declan had developed a keen interest in expanding into the smart technology sector. Corbin, known as the godfather of the entertainment industry, had made millions funding several blockbuster projects recently. Flush with cash, he wanted to divert some capital into a lucrative side hustle. Leonardo Salazar, who rarely interacted with these families, was also present. Rounding out the guest list were Slade Thorne from Port Caspian and Mason Reed from Gotham.
"Jasper, what are you doing here?" Jasper Jett's appearance caught Maeve slightly off guard.
Ignoring Andres's murderous glare, Jasper pulled Maeve into a massive hug. "Maeve, I came all the way here just to support you as your family."
"When it comes to business partnerships, we have to keep our wits about us," he babbled. "You're still young, you don't know how vicious the world can be. The guys here today are all notorious sharks. With me around, I can keep them from exploiting legal loopholes and dragging you down."
Seeing Jasper getting carried away, Slade Thorne clamped a heavy hand onto his shoulder and physically peeled him off Maeve. "Apologies, everyone. I forgot to put him on a leash before I left the house. Didn't expect him to run off on his own."
Jasper shot Slade a lethal glare. "Can you ever speak like a normal human being?"
Slade returned a cold smirk.
"Don't forget the mission you're actually supposed to be on. Have you gathered the evidence? Solved the issues?" Slade demanded. "I handed you a massive case, and days later, you haven't even finished half of it. I came to Aethelburg on official business, while you shamelessly hitched a ride in my car, just to stand in front of Maeve and accuse me of being a shark. You say I don't speak like a human, but have you heard a word coming out of your own mouth?"
When it came to bickering, Slade never let himself lose. Jasper absolutely loathed Slade's overwhelming need to dominate every situation.
Slade pointed at Andres, his expression threatening. "Andres, you're really something, gossiping about me behind my back."
Andres smoothly passed the blame to Silas Thorne. "You can't blame me for that. Your brother Silas was the one who told me you'd finally settled down with a boyfriend."
This time, Maeve was genuinely shocked. Since when were Silas and Andres close enough to casually gossip?
Andres felt zero guilt about shifting the blame. He wasn't particularly fond of either of the Thorne brothers anyway. Giving them an excuse to fight each other was just free entertainment for him.
Slade was furious. "My brother doesn't even know who Jasper is, so there's no way he called him my boyfriend. Not to mention I'd never date a guy. And even if I did, you think I'd go for someone like Jasper?"
