Though the arranged marriage talks had fizzled out when Nancy went abroad, Declan's life had still been entirely derailed by her interference.
Because of her, he hadn't been able to openly introduce Naomi to his parents. That suffocating lack of control over his own destiny left Declan utterly devoid of sympathy for the woman screaming on the floor.
Everyone in the room had their own hidden agenda. As a result, not a single person stepped forward to rescue Nancy from Maeve's brutal torture.
They were all waiting to see where Andres stood.
Nancy's beautiful, weeping face failed to stir a single drop of pity in Andres. When Maeve had first walked into the party drenched in blood, he immediately knew she had fought a savage battle. It stood to reason that Nancy was the architect of that ambush. She had dug her own grave.
However, when Nancy brought up Master Finch's astrological prophecy, Andres instinctively checked Maeve's reaction.
Seeing her eyes remain completely flat and unaffected made his stomach drop. She clearly already knew.
"Nancy, there is absolutely nothing between us," Andres stated coldly.
"As for whatever nonsense Master Finch predicted back then, I consider it total garbage."
"And what I really want to know is, who exactly did you murder?"
Nancy shrieked, her voice cracking, "I haven't killed anyone!"
She pointed a bloody, mangled hand at Maeve.
"She's making it all up to frame me!"
"Andres, look at her! Look at this monster! What is the difference between her and a serial killer?"
"We live in a modern society. If she touches one more hair on my head, she will face severe legal consequences."
"What could you possibly see in a lunatic with zero moral boundaries?"
"You're the head of the White family! Aren't you afraid that associating with this trash will drag you through the mud?"
Naomi Lowell stormed forward and slapped Nancy hard across the face.
"As long as I crossed the line and committed murder, you could permanently brand me a psychotic butcher."
"A prestigious family like the Whites would never accept a woman with a criminal record."
"It was the perfect excuse to sever my relationship with him so you could swoop right back into his arms."
"Nancy, oh, Nancy. You really are ruthless when it comes to yourself."
"You knew I'd torture you the second you fell into my hands, yet you still committed fully to the performance."
"What's a few slaps? What's a few torn fingernails?"
"As long as you endured the temporary agony, you'd achieve your ultimate goal."
"A very calculated, very profitable gamble."
