"Hurry up, go do your work," Wiona urged. "I need to have a long, detailed chat with my sister. Don't linger around here, or she'll feel too self-conscious and I won't be able to get any gossip out of her." She shot Conrad a pointed look, signaling him to make himself scarce.
Conrad felt incredibly helpless. He had just watched several of her cousins leave, only to have her sister swoop in and monopolize her. "Wiona, I really do have something to say..."
Wiona stood on her tiptoes and pressed a quick kiss to the corner of his mouth. "Be good, honey. Whatever it is, we can whisper about it tonight."
Conrad had no choice but to yield. To insist on staying would make him an obtuse, unromantic fool. He simply patted Wiona's head and smiled with deep affection. "Alright, take your time. Have a good chat." He nodded briefly at Madison before walking briskly out of the gazebo.
Once he was gone, Madison's eyes instantly welled up with tears. "Wiona, Tatum is the absolute worst! He's still holding onto a grudge from eight years ago. I swear he's trying to torture me to death. You have to save me." She buried her face completely in Wiona's embrace like a pitiful puppy.
That was when Wiona finally got a clear look at Madison's neck. It wasn't just a hickey. There were bite marks too. Since it was summer, the evidence was glaringly obvious. Wiona's heart churned with shock. Tatum actually bit her? A wave of sympathy washed over Wiona. She reached out and gently touched the marks on Madison's neck. "Does it hurt? I'm going to go get justice for you. He went too far. How could he bite you?"
Wiona was genuinely a bit angry. She had assumed Tatum would show some restraint, but it seemed he had turned into an out-of-control brute. However, she had barely stood up before Madison yanked her back down.
"No, don't go. Wiona, he is acting like a resentful ex right now. He harbors so much bitterness toward me. If I hadn't promised to come stay at the Blue family estate to develop our feelings, he would have taken me right there in the hotel. He's completely lost his mind, and reasoning with him is useless." Madison lowered her head in defeat, clearly at her wits' end regarding Tatum's unhinged behavior.
