As soon as he finished speaking, the butler knocked on the door. He then reported on Sebastian taking Bella to the auction that day, and gave a detailed account of how Lillian had outbid everyone without blinking, willing to pay any price to secure the piece.

“So that’s what happened,” the old man said, his voice laced with anger. “That scoundrel is getting more and more out of line. He knows what state the Mercer family is in, yet he still flaunts that woman around town. He's completely clueless!”

She didn't compete with Bella for anything at first, but for that final set of antique jewelry, she was willing to pay a ridiculous price to win it. It must be extraordinarily important to her.
