The staff said you opened them up a few days ago to take some things out. Sounded like highly valuable antiques, uncut jade, that sort of thing. Where did you get all that?"
"Enough. Stop asking," Brandon snapped. "The matter is settled. No one breathes a word about this to anyone on the outside, and that includes Dad."
"Did something huge happen?" Colin pressed. "You're acting so secretive, and now I'm not even allowed to ask?"
"The items belonged to the Lancaster family in Midvale," Brandon confessed. "When I went with Lillian to Midvale last time, I took a tour and noted down a few things.
You know we've been desperately short on cash lately, right? I got a few guys together and pulled some items from our maternal grandparents' estate in Midvale. Because I was in a rush, I tossed them into an auction house here in Northwyn.
Do you remember the auction Lillian and Bella attended a few days ago?
Lillian recognized the pieces and dug up the truth.
I had no choice but to return whatever hadn't been sold yet."
Hearing this, Colin didn't think his brother had done anything wrong. In fact, he felt that since the items were already out, they shouldn't have been returned.
"Brandon, you're out of your mind! You went through all the trouble to haul that stuff out, why would you give it back?
Don't we have a rightful share to the estate in Midvale too?
Even if it's split three ways, we get two shares. Lillian is only one person; she only gets one."
Lillian surely wished he thought that way too.
"Share? What share? Does the Lancaster family's estate in Midvale have a damn thing to do with us?
We inherit the Mercer family, and Lillian inherits the Lancaster family. Did you forget?"
Colin actually had forgotten. If Brandon hadn't brought it up, it wouldn't have even crossed his mind.
