"She has her priorities completely backwards. How can someone be this oblivious? It's infuriating."
"Mom, please calm down," Bella soothed over the phone. "Let me figure out what's going on.
"And whatever you do, please don't let her see how frustrated you are. Aside from keeping up appearances, you know how crucial she is. She's going to be my mother-in-law, and I'm going to need her help navigating the family."
Sabrina's anger was justified. With her cunning and connections, she could manufacture a dozen different ways for Debbie to 'accidentally' run into Old Mr. Blake. As long as Debbie played along, it was a guaranteed win.
But the woman simply refused to cooperate, and now she was completely MIA.
If Debbie hadn't been dragging her feet, she might already be checking into a honeymoon suite with Old Mr. Blake by now.
Sabrina let out a frustrated sigh. "I know, I know. She's your future mother-in-law. I'm just venting. What else can I do?"
And truly, venting was her only option.
As the prospective matriarch of the Blake family, Debbie's status would be incredibly useful to them in the future. Sabrina had no choice but to bite her tongue.
Bella didn't waste any time. She immediately dialed Debbie's number.
The moment the call connected, the first thing Bella heard was laughter.
It was a breathless, euphoric sound, thick with a very specific kind of satisfaction.
Instantly, Bella understood exactly what was happening.
Debbie had likely anticipated her call and answered it specifically so Bella would hear that sound.
"Bella, darling, what do you need?" Debbie's voice was languid. "I have to tell you, I probably won't be able to keep your mother company for the next few days.
"Lucas is back. And you know how it is with energetic young men. He's so demanding... I simply can't slip away."
The implication was painfully obvious. Only a fool would have missed it.
Bella took a sharp breath, forcing herself to maintain her composure.
Swallowing her irritation, she forced a polite tone. "I see, Ms. Harris. Have a wonderful time. We can catch up later."
She hung up the phone, her expression darkening instantly.
