No matter how you looked at it, Bella was always much better than Lillian.
Even though she had been a bit greedy and eager for quick success lately, it was still within the limits of what Sebastian could tolerate and accept.
At the very least, she was vastly superior to Lillian.
Without him and the Mercers, Lillian was nothing.
Bella, on the other hand, had a certain halo about her that Lillian lacked, and that alone made her far superior.
For a moment, Sebastian's gaze toward Bella softened significantly.
Bella naturally noticed this. She understood Sebastian too well—that was exactly why she had come to him the moment she heard the news.
She was entirely satisfied with his reaction.
This was the exact effect she wanted.
"Sebastian, do you think she'll come crawling back to you once her company goes under?"
Sebastian scoffed. "Do I look like a recycling bin? Just because she comes crying to me doesn't mean I have to take her in. Besides, with whatever men she's got backing her these days, she won't need me anyway."
"But she's sick, after all," Bella said softly. "Men out there are shrewd. Who's going to want a sick, divorced woman with a kid? I'm just worried that when she hits rock bottom, she'll come right back here."
Sebastian's expression darkened. Come back? Did she really treat him like a dumping ground?
Of course, Bella was entirely unaware of this calculation.
The thought of Sebastian going back to the Blake estate for dinner made Bella incredibly anxious.
His parents hadn't just disliked her for a day or two; they had always opposed the marriage.
If they threw a fit or did something extreme to stop the wedding, she would be in serious trouble.
A creeping sense of dread settled over her.
"Sebastian, I've actually been meaning to find a chance to get closer to your parents. You know I'm not a bad person—maybe they just misunderstand me. If we could just clear the air, that would be wonderful. But if we can't... I really don't know what to do."
