Her prison sentence was an injustice?
Brandon stopped in his tracks, lingering by the door to listen to the employees gossip.
Yes, ever since Lillian released her statement the day before, the internet had been flooded with wild speculations, and all the heat was pointed directly at the Mercer family.
When it came to Lillian's time in prison, the Mercer family knew the truth better than anyone.
In reality, they hadn't been completely sure if it was Lillian or Bella who had committed the crime. Had there not been so many important guests at the house that day, they could have handled the situation internally, completely avoiding public prosecution and jail time.
But someone had called the cops. Once the police filed formal charges, the family had to hand someone over. Someone had to be labeled the attacker and face the legal consequences.
Given the circumstances at the time, Bella was undeniably more valuable to the family than Lillian. Keeping Bella out of jail served their long-term interests.
So, the only viable option was Lillian.
In a situation like that, were they supposed to just abandon their own interests? Of course not. Lillian's status in the family was already set in stone, but the connections and benefits Bella brought to the table were tangible and immediate.
So, they handed Lillian over without a second thought.
She had confessed to it at the time, too. Even though her confession had been laced with absolute despair, she had admitted to it. Didn't that mean she should be the one to face the consequences?
Even if they reopened the investigation now, they had no idea who the real attacker was.
What was the point in digging for the truth after all this time?
Grandmother still hadn't woken from her coma, and perhaps one day she would simply pass away peacefully in her sleep.
Although Bella and the others were frustrated with Lillian now, it was better to leave well enough alone.
Lillian herself didn't have any evidence to prove her innocence anyway.
Because of that, no one in the family ever entertained the idea of clearing her name.
Maintaining the status quo worked perfectly fine for everyone involved.
