Ethan froze in his tracks, terrified to take even a single step further.
What was he supposed to do?
He hadn't meant to let it slip...
He had done the legwork, but now he was taking the heat for the entire operation.
Fine. It was time to honor his childhood oath. He would throw himself on the grenade for his boss.
Turning back to face Lillian, Ethan offered a painfully awkward smile. "Uh, Ms. Mercer... this had nothing to do with Mr. Prescott! I was just being nosy. I saw how long your divorce was dragging on, and since you were setting up the new company, you needed a clean legal slate. So, without Mr. Prescott's permission, I took it upon myself to—"
"Without his permission?" Lillian interrupted smoothly.
She looked from Ethan to Leonard.
"Your loyalty to him is truly awe-inspiring."
Lillian looked at Leonard, her tone dripping with sarcasm but underscored by genuine admiration.
It was enviable. Having someone so fiercely loyal who handled every detail flawlessly and took the fall without hesitation meant Leonard was a lucky man.
Lillian was far too brilliant to be fooled by a flimsy cover story.
Leonard let out a defeated sigh. "Give it up, Ethan. You can't lie to her."
Ethan rubbed the back of his neck. "Right. Ms. Mercer, you're brilliant, unbelievably sharp..."
"Skip the flattery," Lillian commanded.
She looked down, a soft smile playing on her lips, before meeting his eyes again. "Thank you, Leonard."
Ethan blinked in confusion. "Wait, thank you? You're thanking him?"
Lillian nodded. "Yes, I'm thanking him. And thank you too, Ethan, for getting it done.
"If you two hadn't intervened, who knows how long I would have been trapped. I was desperate to cut ties with him.
"But he was always playing games, refusing to make a final decision. You did me a massive favor."
Ethan exhaled a massive sigh of relief. "As long as you're not mad, Ms. Mercer."
Lillian chuckled. "So, that lawyer is permanently on your payroll now? You get all the Blake Group's internal gossip before anyone else?"
