It was nearly noon. Dylan's parents went to prepare lunch, while Leila dragged Dylan into his room to apply medicine to his wounds.
Norah shot Xavier a meaningful glance, and the two stepped outside to talk.
Once they reached the yard, Norah carefully voiced her thoughts. "I think there's a mole in the Donovan family."
Xavier lifted his gaze. "What makes you say that?"
"Yesterday, when we were leaving, Dylan asked when we were heading out," Norah whispered. "You told him we were heading back to J City right then."
It was only due to a traffic accident on the mountain road that their departure was delayed. By the time they finally made it back to the city, the sun had already set, and they had been forced to stay.
But as far as the Donovans were concerned, they had already left.
Xavier narrowed his eyes. "Someone thought we were gone, so they seized the opportunity to demolish the house."
Norah pressed her lips together and nodded. "It's just too much of a coincidence."
"It couldn't be Dylan!" Xavier frowned. Over the past few days, he had seen that Dylan was straightforward and honorable, just like his brother. He genuinely cared for his parents and would never do something so duplicitous.
Norah's eyes darted around before she smiled. "Are we staying here tonight?"
"Probably," Xavier nodded. It seemed those thugs were willing to try anything. If someone in the house was indeed acting as an informant, he worried they might return if he and Norah weren't around.
"Then I'll head upstairs and see if my old room still has mice," Norah said.
Xavier raised an eyebrow. She flashed him a smile and turned to leave.
On her way upstairs, her phone rang. It was Jonathan.
"Mom said you went on a company retreat," Jonathan said. "It's Tuesday already. You're still not back?"
"We're having a great time," Norah hedged. "I'll be back in a couple of days."
Jonathan paused. "You're out there with Xavier, aren't you?"
