Lorelei's face went completely rigid. When she had hauled her cooler over in the dim lighting, she assumed no one would notice the switch. Being brutally called out in front of everyone felt like a slap.
Whitney's eyes darted nervously. She marched over to the cooler and yanked the lid open. Sure enough, two premium blue lobsters sat alongside the sad, frozen Australian lobster Lorelei had originally bragged about. She stood there, utterly dumbfounded.
"Acting high and mighty over a damn lobster?" Adrian's voice dripped with pure disdain. "I thought it was actually something special."
Sara arched an eyebrow perfectly. "Well, to some people, it's the height of luxury."
Whitney's face cycled through shades of red and pale white. She had absolutely nothing to say.
Humiliated, she grabbed Lorelei's arm and pulled her up. "Let's go back. I have nothing to say to these people!"
Adrian turned to Sara with a mocking sigh. "They ruined the vibe and tried to steal our food. Don't you think they owe us an apology?"
Sara played along flawlessly. "Oh, let it go. You really can't expect basic class from certain people."
Adrian expertly mimicked Lorelei's sugary-sweet tone from earlier. "Don't forget to take your lobsters back with you! My mom doesn't let me eat frozen seafood!"
Listening to the two of them tag-team the insult, Norah looked down, hiding a bright smile behind her hand.
Whitney, trembling with rage, looked ready to lunge forward and start a screaming match, but Lorelei yanked her back. "We're leaving!"
Without another word, she dragged Whitney back toward their tent.
Right before she turned away, Lorelei threw a subtle, lingering glance directly at Caleb.
Caleb stood up like a puppet on a string. "We should head back too," he told Holly.
Holly had thoroughly enjoyed watching the arrogant Whitney get put in her place. She genuinely liked Norah and Sara. But seeing her boyfriend ready to walk, she had no choice but to stand up and offer a quiet, apologetic smile,
"Norah, Sara... we're going to head out too."
Sara frowned slightly but didn't say a word to stop her.
