Ethan stood up and, as if searching for some sort of comfort, pulled open a long-forgotten drawer in his study.
It was a drawer Grace used to use.
After the divorce, he’d had all her things cleared out, but he had left this one drawer untouched.
He didn’t even know why himself.
Inside were only a few items.
A fountain pen she favored, and a well-worn professional textbook with dog-eared pages.
And… tucked into the very back corner, a small velvet box.
Ethan’s hand trembled slightly as he picked up the box.
He opened it. Inside, a pair of simple, elegant silver cufflinks lay quietly.
They were in a style he liked.
He remembered now. It was a gift from Grace on their first wedding anniversary.
At the time, Lilian had been hospitalized for “heart discomfort.”
He had stayed in Lilian’s hospital room for a full day and night.
He didn’t answer Grace’s calls.
He didn’t reply to her texts.
By the time he finally remembered their so-called “anniversary” and returned home, it was late the following night.
Grace was sitting in the dark living room, having waited for him all night.
On the table was a dinner that had long gone cold, and a small cake.
When she saw him, her eyes lit up for a moment, only to dim again.
She didn’t ask a single question, simply handed him the box.
“Happy anniversary.”
What had he done then?
Oh, he had merely glanced at it before casually tossing the box into this very drawer.
His voice had been full of undisguised disgust and impatience.
“More of this cheap junk? Grace, can’t you be more creative?”
“Instead of wasting your time on this, you should be learning from Lilian how to be a likable woman.”
He hadn’t even bothered to open it to see what was inside.
Ethan’s hand trembled more violently.
