Away from that suffocating environment, Grace finally let out a long sigh of relief.
She looked down, stroking the jade bracelet on her wrist, a warm feeling spreading through her heart.
"I didn't expect your grandmother to be so kind."
"Of course." While driving, Damien reached into the back seat with one hand, grabbed a bag, and tossed it into Grace’s lap.
"Open it."
"What is it?"
Grace opened the bag, puzzled.
A moment later, she was speechless.
It was full of envelopes stuffed with cash.
A thick stack of them, each one bulging and heavy in her hands.
"This is…"
"Uncle Martin, my other aunt, and some of the cousins secretly gave these to me on our way out," Damien said, holding back a laugh.
"Uncle Martin said he never really liked that other socialite anyway, and that you seemed much better. He told me to treat you well."
"My other aunt said that even though you've been married before, any woman who can tame a hell-raiser like me must be something special, and I'd better not scare you away."
"Even my dad…" Damien paused. "He had the butler secretly slip a credit card in there."
Grace was completely floored.
"But… at the dinner table, they were all…"
They had all looked at her with such disdain, as if they wanted to eat her alive.
"That was all for my mother's benefit," Damien explained with a helpless shrug.
"My mother is obsessed with appearances and control. The relatives are all afraid of her, so they don't dare to openly contradict her."
"But in reality, they've been sick of her high-and-mighty attitude for years."
"Besides, while our relatives can be snobbish, they aren't completely clueless."
"Everyone in our circle knows the story of how you nearly died trying to save Ethan."
"They might not say it out loud, but they respect you for your courage."
