Five Years Wasted Now They Beg Her Back novel Chapter 16

She clutched the manuscript to her chest and said in a raspy voice, “Come in.”

The door opened, and a man in a well-tailored suit and glasses walked in. Following him was a doctor carrying a medical kit.

Felix spoke respectfully.

“Ms. Hart, you’ve been unconscious for two days. You have multiple soft tissue contusions and a low-grade fever. Mr. Clarke instructed that if you were willing, the doctor could examine you first.”

Grace didn’t refuse.

She desperately needed it.

After a thorough check-up, the diagnosis was long-term malnutrition and exhaustion. The doctor prescribed some medication and was then politely escorted out by Felix.

Grace forced herself to sit up and bowed her head deeply to Felix.

“Mr. Warren, thank you. And please, thank Mr. Clarke for saving my life.”

“But...”

She looked up, her gaze dim but firm.

“I have to leave immediately.”

Felix seemed to have anticipated this, showing no surprise.

“Ms. Hart, you don’t need to be so guarded. You are Mr. Clarke’s guest. You are perfectly safe here.”

Safe?

Grace laughed bitterly to herself.

That word had long become a luxury she couldn’t afford.

The Hart family, the Ward family—the places she once thought were the safest had inflicted the most lethal wounds.

All of it had convinced her that in this world, there was no such thing as kindness without a catch.

She was afraid.
