An uproar swept through the audience.
The Nemesis Group Inc. representatives hidden in the crowd looked uneasy, glancing at their watches frequently.
Why hadn’t the sonic attack started?
Why was that woman still standing up there, talking so calmly?
Grace let out a cold laugh and continued.
“For this so-called ‘key,’ my mother was poisoned to death by a close relative, and my grandmother was forced into exile, her whereabouts unknown.”
“I was betrayed by my own flesh and blood, sold into a life that was nothing more than a gilded prison.”
“But I want to tell everyone here, and the ‘Shepherds’ hiding in the shadows—”
At this, Grace’s voice rose sharply, her gaze becoming resolute.
“Technology was never meant to be a weapon for the elite, or a justification for hunting our own! The tragedy of the Helix Line must never be repeated!”
Applause.
It started with a few scattered claps, then erupted like thunder.
However, just as the applause reached its peak—
*BANG!*
A loud noise echoed from the ventilation duct overhead, and then the lights in the entire auditorium suddenly went out.
Out of the blackness, canisters streaked onto the stage, erupting into blinding plumes of acrid smoke.
“Ah—!”
“There’s been an explosion!”
“Run!”
Screams and the sound of toppling tables and chairs filled the chaos.
Through the smoke, a dozen or so dark figures rushed toward the podium.
They were armed with specialized electric capture nets and high-strength polymer ropes.
“Grace!”
Damien roared, a blur of motion as he shielded Grace. He connected a savage kick to the lead attacker’s chest, the man sprawling backward into the chaotic crowd.
“You’re asking for it!”
