Three months later.
Damien had booked the entire top floor of Jarrow City’s best private hospital.
“Why isn’t she out yet? She’s been in there for two hours!”
Damien paced the hallway, running his hands through his hair.
“Mr. Clarke, giving birth isn’t that fast,” Felix advised from the side.
Damien’s face was pale. “Can we just not have the baby? Can we put it back?”
Felix was speechless.
*You’ve got some nerve thinking that.*
Just then, the delivery room door opened.
Damien lunged forward, nearly knocking over the nurse.
“Congratulations, Mr. Clarke, it’s a girl! Mother and daughter are both safe and sound!”
Damien’s knees finally gave out, and he slumped against the wall, the sheer weight of his terror finally giving way to relief.
Not to thank the heavens, but because he was genuinely weak with fear.
He tried to rush into the room but was blocked by Marianne.
“What’s the hurry?”
Marianne wiped tears from her eyes, sniffled, and said, “Let the doctors get her settled first.”
Damien took several deep breaths to suppress the urge to barge in.
Soon, a nurse wheeled Grace out.
Seeing her covered in sweat and pale, Damien’s heart ached.
Back in the VIP recovery suite, Damien didn’t even glance at the baby. He threw himself at Grace’s bedside, gripping her hands as if he could keep the world at bay, his gaze thick with unshed tears.
“Damien, why are you crying?” Grace managed a weak smile, reaching up to wipe the tears from his face.
“I was scared,” Damien said, holding her hand and kissing it. “Grace, I was so scared. For a moment there, I thought I was going to lose you.”
“You silly man,” Grace said, looking at the perfect little bundle in the bassinet beside them. “Go look at our daughter.”
The little one’s eyes were closed, her thick, dark lashes casting soft shadows against her delicate cheeks.
The most amazing thing was that genetic testing confirmed she had perfectly inherited Grace’s optimized gene segments.
