“I really don’t want you to be so polite. With the friendship we have, I actually hope you’ll come to us whenever you need something. That’s how we get closer, isn’t it?”
Irvin was getting better at this. He understood that relationships grew stronger when people shared and helped each other. Being too formal just pushed people apart.
He reached into a drawer and pulled out a small bottle, handing it to Laurinda.
She took it and noticed right away that this wasn’t like the things he’d given her before.
“What’s this?”
“It’s the latest neural medication I’ve been working on. It can actually repair damaged nerves. I thought it might be useful for you.”
Laurinda stared at him, completely stunned. She knew exactly what it meant to repair damaged nerves. Something this advanced… and Irvin just handed it over without a second thought? Did he really trust her that much?
“You’re giving me…?”
“It’s a New Year’s gift. York mentioned you don’t just have a lab, but also a bunch of biological products in development. I figured this could come in handy for you.”
Laurinda felt a rush of emotion and couldn’t even find the right words. She’d poured so much money into her labs every year, and even then, barely saw a few successful products. But Irvin just gave her one of his most important breakthroughs, just like that. The impact of it nearly overwhelmed her.
Seeing her reaction, Irvin laughed softly. “I’m not as selfless as I look. I heard about you and Adolphus. From now on, I’m sticking close to you two. So, does this still feel like too big of a gift?”
“It does. But Irvin, I’m so glad we’re friends. Whatever happens in the future, as long as I’m able, I’ve got your back.”
Laurinda patted his shoulder, and she meant every word. She knew Irvin was just giving her an excuse to accept his gift without guilt. The Main family had a long history. Even if they weren’t what they used to be, they didn’t really need her to protect them.
They spent a little while longer in the lab, looking over some of his other research.
