She turned to Carla and Len, hoping for a little support. “Don’t you think their outfits are a bit too plain?”
“Not really. You’re just so used to seeing glamorous dresses that you can’t imagine anyone showing up to a party in something simple. Some people need fancy clothes to make an impression—but Adolphus and Laurinda? They’re the ones who make the clothes look good. Whatever they’re wearing, their natural elegance shines through.”
“And besides…” Carla cast a quick glance at Laurinda, busy fixing Adolphus’s cufflinks, and lowered her voice, “Nelly’s schemes are just too obvious. Laurinda doesn’t need to pile on the glitz—it’d just make her look petty, as if she’s trying to compete. Isn’t it much more satisfying to win by just being effortlessly composed? It’ll sting a lot more when she does.”
Carla could already see how things might go down—nobody wanted to cause trouble at a gathering like this, and she could only hope that Nelly would keep her wits about her.
Seraphina looked back at Adolphus and Laurinda and decided Carla was right. “Alright then, let’s get going.”
“Let’s go!” Carla grabbed Len’s hand and pulled him excitedly toward the door, barely able to contain her anticipation. Something about today’s engagement party told her there was real entertainment ahead.
Len followed after her, his gaze full of warmth. The affection in his eyes was enough to spark envy in anyone watching.
Standing next to Laurinda, Seraphina caught the look Adolphus gave her—so open, so tender—and gave a small, disparaging tsk. “The men in the Lane family—hopeless romantics through and through, every last one.”
Adolphus had just reached for Laurinda’s hand, ready to lead her outside, but at Seraphina’s comment, he paused and gave a wry smile. “One of these days, we really should check Patten’s DNA. Make sure he’s actually one of us.”
Just mentioning Patten seemed to put Seraphina in a bad mood. She rolled her eyes. “He’s still getting his little ‘lesson’ in there. Dad said he’s not to step foot out until he says so. Honestly, he’s the biggest embarrassment the Lane family’s had in a hundred years.”
