From Ashes of Scandal to His Embrace (Laurinda) novel Chapter 537

Laurinda had always seen the world for what it was—she had long since grown accustomed to the fickle nature of the people around her, and she barely spared a thought for those bound to her by blood, let alone for anyone whose only tie was mutual interest.

“Honestly,” she said, “I can understand why Jed pulled those strings. He wanted to make me owe him, in hopes that one day, if the Carl family found itself in crisis, I—or Adolphus—would step in for Cathleen and stop her from falling too far.”

She gave a soft chuckle. “But do I look like someone so easily duped? Did he really think I couldn’t see where his interests lay? The only reason I helped Cathleen back then was because she’s Irvin’s sister, nothing to do with family loyalty or personal gain. Purely because I see Irvin as a true friend.”

She left it at that. Felix took her meaning at once, nodding with a gentle smile. “Here in Cabinda, you do what makes you happy. The Lane family will stand behind you—you’ve no need to worry about anyone else’s approval.”

His tone grew even warmer as he looked at her with open admiration. Inwardly, Felix thought his son Adolphus was blessed to have crossed paths with a girl like Laurinda.

After seeing Felix off at the Lane estate, Adolphus and Laurinda lingered awhile—they shared a light meal before retiring to their suite for the night.

Inside the house, Felix recounted the events at the Main family’s place to Tanya. She snorted and gave a cold smile.

“Jed is really losing his touch as he ages. He didn’t just want Adolphus and Laurinda indebted to him—he was also angling for your approval. That old man never stops playing angles. Did Adolphus get angry?”

What really piqued Tanya’s curiosity was Adolphus’s reaction. With Cabinda’s four great families always jostling for position—and the current situation far from settled—it was best if there weren’t any more rifts brewing.
