“What?” The two shocking pieces of information left Jewell’s mind reeling. “Wait, hold on. Let me… let me process this.”
A good ten seconds passed before she could even begin to digest what Jade had said. Her gaze dropped to Jade’s still-flat stomach.
“You’re saying… you’re pregnant? But Hudson already has a child with someone else? You mean that woman we saw at the mall yesterday?”
Jade gave a low hum of confirmation, her mood visibly sinking. “Yeah.”
Jewell moved to sit beside her and took her hand. “Hudson doesn’t seem like that kind of to me. Could there be a misunderstanding?”
Jade forced a weak, bitter smile. “I wish it were just a misunderstanding.”

But after verifying it multiple times, the facts were clear. And misunderstanding or not, she knew Hudson. If he didn’t care deeply about Amara, he would never have gone this far.
“How did all this happen?” Jewell pressed.
Jade told Jewell everything, from Hudson’s birthday to everything that had happened since. By the end, her eyes were red-rimmed.
“In three years of marriage, Hudson has never spoken to me that gently. He’d never go shopping with me. He treats Amara so specially, it hurts just to see it…”
“There, there,” Jewell said softly, moving closer to put an arm around Jade’s shoulders, patting her back soothingly,
Jewell continued, “Hudson’s behavior is awful, I get it. But think about it. With his status, if he really had a woman and child on the side, why wait until now to bring them home? Maybe there really is some misunderstanding. I think you should try talking to him properly. And tell him about the baby. The baby is both of yours. You shouldn’t have to carry this burden alone.”
Jade bit her lip, torn. “But-”
“Jade,” Jewell interrupted, her voice firm. “Look at me.”
Jade raised her teary eyes to meet Jewell’s.
“Forget everything else. Just think about how long you’ve loved Hudson, and that you’ve been

married for almost three years. Are you really willing to just hand the man you love so much over to someone else?”
Jade pinched her palm lightly. It was true. Since marrying Hudson, all the pressure she’d endured, everything she’d given… it was all real.
To give up now felt utterly unfair.
“Talk to him,” Jewell said, voicing Jade’s own thoughts. “Give him and yourself a chance to work this out. If the talk doesn’t go well, then we can think about other options. It’s not too late.”
On the way back, Jade received a message from Michael.
Michael sent, “My project is finished now, Jade. You’ve always kept things to yourself. I don’t know what’s happening between you and Hudson, but don’t hold back because of me. Don’t let yourself be mistreated. If you’re not happy with the Walter family, just come home. I can take care of you.”
A tear fell onto the phone screen. Jade tilted her head back, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand before looking down again, forcing the tears back. Her fingers tapped out a reply.
Jade sent, “I know. Thanks, Dad.”
The taxi stopped at the villa’s entrance. Jade got out and walked slowly inside.
Before she even reached the living room, she could see clearly through the large floor-to- ceiling windows. Hudson was holding Cortney in his arms, his head bowed as he helped her with a puzzle. Amara joined in from time to time. The atmosphere was so warm and perfect that it was painful to watch.
At that moment, Jade felt like retreating. Things have already gone this far. What’s there left to talk about?
But she had loved Hudson for so, so long. Loved him enough to marry him despite the gossip about her being a gold-digger,
During these three years, his passion in bed, those moments of unexpected tenderness… she didn’t believe they were fake.
She couldn’t just give up like this. At the very least… at the very least, she needed to have a proper talk with him. If only to get closure for all her years of love and the three years invested in this marriage.

Jade gathered her courage and entered the house. As she walked into the living room, heard laughter and conversation.
“Mr. Walter, you’re so nice to me. I like you,” Cortney’s voice piped up.
Hudson chuckled softly, “I like you, too.”

Cortney wrapped her arms around Hudson’s neck. “But… but aren’t you with Ms. Merchant? If you and Ms. Merchant have a baby, will you stop liking me?”
As she spoke, big fat tears rolled down her cheeks. “I don’t want that… I already… I already don’t have a daddy… I don’t want to lose Mr. Walter too…”
Hudson pulled out a tissue and wiped her tears. “That won’t happen. I don’t plan on having any children of my own anytime soon, so you don’t need to worry.”
But Cortney seemed lost in her own sadness, crying uncontrollably, not hearing a word. “Why… why don’t I have a daddy anymore? Mommy says I’m starting kindergarten soon… Will the kids in class call me the kid with no daddy? Will… will they not want to play with me because I don’t have a daddy?”

Her childish, tearful words twisted Hudson’s heart. He hugged her gently, his voice soft as he comforted her, “Who says you don’t have a daddy? I’ll be your daddy. If anyone at kindergarten says one bad word to you, you just tell me, and I’ll make sure they regret it.”
“Really?”
“Of course, really.”
Hearing this confirmation, Cortney instantly brightened, her eyes crinkling into happy slits. “That’s great! Then I won’t be scared anymore! Mr. Walter, you’re the best!”
Seeing her smile, Hudson quietly let out a sigh of relief.
Not far away, Jade had heard every single word. She couldn’t make out what they said after that. It was as if her ears were plugged with water, her whole body held under, a suffocating feeling clogging her chest, making it impossible to breathe.
Jade bent over, clutching her chest, gasping for air as if trying to drive out the chilling sense of suffocation and get some oxygen.
So what if Cortney isn’t Hudson’s biological daughter?
He didn’t even care whose daughter she was. He just told her to think of him as her daddy.
