She’d probably have a stroke.
I smirked. At least there was a silver lining.
For the rest of the afternoon, Steven remained shut in his study, completely absorbed in his work, just like the old days. He paid me no mind, and the few times our eyes met, his gaze was cold and distant, as if I were nothing more than a piece of furniture. It was hard to believe he was the same man who had been radiating murderous rage just a few hours ago.
Finally, at four o’clock, after six long hours of waiting, Rachel called, her voice choked with joyful tears. “Zephyra, the surgery is over! Horace is out of danger, and they saved his leg! He just came out of the operating room. He’s still under anesthesia, but I’ll call you when he wakes up.”
Tears of relief streamed down my face. “That’s wonderful. But will he… will he be able to walk normally again?”
That was my biggest fear. Horace’s career was just beginning. He was on the verge of becoming a star. If his leg was permanently damaged, it would destroy his dreams.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before Rachel spoke again. “Zephyra, the doctors said it depends on his recovery. He definitely won’t be able to walk for a while. As for the future… we’ll have to wait and see. We won’t know for sure until he wakes up.”
Her voice brightened. “But I believe in miracles. I mean, we all thought he would have to lose his leg to survive, but he made it through with both legs intact.”
My heart sank. So it was up to fate now.
I bit my lip, then forced a smile. “Okay. How are his parents holding up?”
“Now that the surgery is over, they’re doing much better. I’ll take good care of them, don’t worry.”
She paused. “Zephyra, I was just talking to one of the doctors. He said that the specialist who consulted is one of the best in the world. Her waiting list is over a year long. Without a prior appointment or some serious connections, there’s no way she would have been available. How did you manage to convince her to help?”
A flicker of guilt passed through me, but I kept my voice light. “Oh, you know Horace. He’s just so charming, the doctor wanted to help him. I just made the introduction. Anyway, you should focus on taking care of them, and yourself. I have to go, but tell Horace I’ll visit as soon as I can, once he’s awake.”
