I stared at him, stunned by his sudden hostility. It took me a moment to recover.
“I didn’t see anything. And even if I had, I would never reveal any secrets.”
His expression remained cold. Feeling like I had done something wrong, I bit my lip. “Okay, I’m leaving. I’ll make you some soup tonight.”
He didn't ask me to stay. I lowered my head and left his office. While waiting for the elevator, a woman in a stunning red dress and another in a professional suit walked up beside me.
The woman in red was Queena. I recognized her immediately. She glanced at me, then looked away, her arms crossed, looking thoroughly annoyed.
The woman in the suit said indignantly, “Queena, what do you think Mr. Lancaster’s wife looks like? He’s kept her hidden for so many years, and she only shows up today. Do you think they’re deeply in love?”
Queena sneered, her face a mask of arrogance. “If they were so in love, would that washed-up housewife be getting hassled by the front desk? I heard she’s useless and can only cook. She’s not worthy of Mr. Lancaster.”
I bristled at the term “washed-up housewife.” Four years of marriage had softened my temper, but my fiery spirit was innate. Before I could say anything, Queena spoke again, her voice filled with jealousy.
“That housewife is nothing. She just has a title. The real threat is the woman Mr. Lancaster has been hiding for years. He’s flying out to see her again next week. This time, I’m going to find out who she is!”
My mind went blank. My heart plummeted, and my body went rigid.
Hidden for years?
What did that mean? Was Steven having an affair?
The other woman was equally incensed. “I don’t get it either. What’s so special about that other woman? Mr. Lancaster flies abroad twice a month to see her and keeps her completely hidden. If Gordon hadn’t let it slip, no one would even know. I wonder if the housewife has any idea.”
Queena’s expression soured. “That housewife knows nothing. Mr. Lancaster would never share his personal life with her. That vixen is the worst. I heard she’s beautiful, and her name is Verna. She’s a brilliant medical student, too. Not only has she known Mr. Lancaster for years, but he’s been funding her entire career. He arranged for her to study abroad just because she wanted to!”
“When has Mr. Lancaster ever been so generous to anyone? He practically yells at me if I get too close. I started from the bottom for him, worked my ass off for over a year to finally get a project that put me in front of him, and all he did was say ‘not bad.’ He wouldn’t even shake my hand, and I’m a project manager now! He won’t even give me the time of day!”
