I gave up my career for him, content to be nothing more than Mrs. Lancaster. I had spent four long years, over fifteen hundred days, loving him with every fiber of my being.
I had cried and I had hurt, but I never stopped loving him.
Steven looked slightly taken aback, his handsome face showing a hint of confusion. “Zephyra, you’re acting very strange tonight.”
I pressed my fingers to his lips, my eyes locked on his. One of the few benefits of my features was that when I wanted to be seductive, my gaze could become utterly captivating.
I reached for his tie, my slender fingers twisting the silk as I gave it a gentle tug.
“Steven, can we have a baby? We’ve been married for so long, and your mother keeps asking. I love children. Can we have a child, please?”
My grandfather always said that a child was the only way to make Steven truly value me.
Steven had always been a responsible man. Even though he didn’t love me and treated me with indifference, for these four years, he always came home, except for business trips and occasional late nights at the office. There were no wild nights out, no debauchery.
He even brought me souvenirs, and after missing our first anniversary, he had been there for every single one since.
I didn’t want our marriage to end like this. I wanted to fight for it.
Steven’s expression shifted, and a slow smile spread across his lips. He seized my hand, pinning it behind my back as he pulled my waist against his and pressed me into the door. He leaned in, his voice a low, husky murmur against my lips.
“Have you no shame, Zephyra? Did I not satisfy you last night?”
I didn’t answer, just tilted my head up to kiss him. He held my waist firmly, the coldness in his eyes carefully concealed. “If you want me, fine. If you want a child, that’s fine too. But you are never to run away from home again. Understand?”
I hesitated for a fraction of a second before a wave of joy washed over me. “Okay.”
The word had barely left my lips before he crushed his mouth to mine, kissing me with a fierce, possessive hunger. He made love to me thoroughly that night.
My heart slowly began to mend, as if none of it had ever happened.
