How could I be crazier than Queena? Less than a month later, Verna returned to the country. As my belly grew larger, Steven juggled his time between the two of us. I hadn't lost my mind yet, but Queena finally snapped completely.
Instead of going after Verna, the madwoman came for me, trying to run me down with her car.
It just so happened that on that very day, Horace had asked to meet me to say goodbye. We were walking across the Aurelian Bridge, reminiscing. He was leaving to pursue his dreams. I felt an immense guilt but offered him my heartfelt blessings. He blessed me in return, ruffling my hair.
“You idiot, there’s nothing to feel guilty about. We’re best friends. If Steven ever bullies you, call me. I’ll fly back and settle the score with him. So what if I end up in the hospital again? At least he’ll know someone has your back.”
“Okay,” I said, and we shared a tearful smile. But in the next second, his expression changed drastically. He shoved me hard, sending me stumbling into a crowd of people who instinctively caught me.
I was unharmed, but I watched in horror as a red sports car slammed into Horace, taking out a section of the bridge railing with him.
Queena died on impact.
“Horace!” I screamed, my voice tearing. A sharp, debilitating pain shot through my lower abdomen, and blood gushed from between my legs. People were trying to pull me away, to get me to a hospital, but I stumbled to the broken edge of the bridge and looked down. There was no sign of him. The agony in my heart was unbearable, and I blacked out…
“Horace!” I jolted awake from the nightmare, drenched in sweat, and sat bolt upright, my mind reeling.
In my past life, I was plagued by nightmares, but since being reborn, I’d barely had any.
This one felt so real, as if it had just happened. Even the dull ache in my chest felt genuine.
The morning sun streamed through the window, painfully bright. A crushing soreness wracked my body. I looked down and saw I was wearing Steven’s black dress shirt. My collarbones and chest were littered with dark bruises.
