Steven’s handsome face was thunderous. “Be quiet.”
“Yes, Mr. Lancaster,” Gordon said, chastened. Then he asked hesitantly, “Mr. Lancaster, are you and… she… really divorced?”
A dark glint appeared in Steven’s eyes, and a wave of irritation crossed his face.
“She needed to have her tantrum. She wouldn’t have been satisfied otherwise.”
Gordon sighed. “Mr. Lancaster, with all due respect, this doesn’t seem like a wise move. Have you seen how many young, handsome men are flocking around her?”
“Horace is younger than you, he’s known her longer than you, and they have a better relationship. They’re childhood friends, and he’s her savior. He can change her mood with a single phone call. He’s already tough competition…”
He trailed off as he caught Steven’s dangerously sharp glare in the rearview mirror.
“…but even though Horace is a strong contender, she seems to have her eye on other rich, powerful pretty boys. So it’s fine, it’s fine, nobody has a chance.”
A cold laugh escaped Steven’s lips. “Gordon, have you decided you never want a year-end bonus again?”
Gordon squirmed. “Mr. Lancaster, I was just talking nonsense! You were married to her. You’re the ex-husband. You have the strongest emotional connection with her. You’re different. Even if she has a line of suitors—childhood sweethearts, office crushes, flashy trust-fund kids—none of them matter.”
“You’re a titan of industry, handsome, powerful, from an elite family. The number of women who want you could circle the globe. If you wanted to win her back, you have a better chance than anyone. Getting remarried is a real possibility.”
Steven ignored him, closing his eyes against the throbbing pain in his head. “Shut up and drive.”
Gordon fell completely silent. “Yes, Mr. Lancaster.”
Meanwhile, Ryan and I were still on the road. The smile hadn’t left his face. He opened a drawer full of snacks.
“Want some?”
The car was going so fast I was afraid I’d get sick. I quickly shook my head, my eyes glued to the road ahead.
