Refusing to let go, refusing to grant him peace. My love for him was a frantic obsession—a relentless entanglement that led to me taking my own life at his and Verna's engagement party. What a curse that must have been.
Ha, to him, I truly was a nightmare.
Steven listened quietly, his refined, pale face flickering with a subtle change. He pressed his thin lips into a straight line, his low, husky voice steady.
"What, are you that curious about the woman in my dream?"
"I'm guessing it was me."
My tone was so certain it made him meet my gaze. His eyes darkened as if lost in thought, and for a moment, he seemed to weigh the idea of admitting it was me before finally looking away and denying it.
"The woman in the dream was despicable. If we were the main characters and you had betrayed me during our marriage, I wouldn't have been weak and pathetic enough to let you go. I would have made it a fight to the death between us."
I remained silent, my gaze locked on him, trying to discern the truth in his words.
He had a point. Steven was ruthless. In our past life, if he'd thought I betrayed him, he would have made my life hell. He never would have divorced me peacefully and given me a generous settlement.
Besides, Steven was nothing like Horace. Horace was emotional and impulsive; if he dreamed of a past life, he would instinctively believe it and easily connect with his past self's feelings.
Steven, on the other hand, was completely rational. Even if he dreamed of a past life, he would see himself as a mere spectator, never allowing himself to get drawn in, and certainly not to this extent. The source of his pain shouldn't have been me.
Everything seemed to indicate Steven hadn't been reborn, and yet... all the signs gave me the distinct impression that he had, in fact, returned.
As if a thought struck him, Steven looked at me. "If the people in the dream were us, what would you do? Apologize to me? Repent? Reconcile?"
His question made me laugh, a loud, unrestrained sound I could barely control.
