As he spoke, his assistant presented the twice-cut stone for my inspection.
Oliver was already drawing attention, and his shouting now attracted an even larger crowd.
Someone in the crowd laughed. "Looks like someone got desperate. Stone gambling is all about risk—one cut to riches, one cut to ruin. It's all for the thrill, kid. That stone of yours is hopeless. You should just toss it."
Ryan frowned at Oliver, looking like a guard dog. "Who are you?"
I was startled.
"He was a customer of mine. Don't be rude," I said.
Ryan immediately backed down. "Okay."
I looked at Oliver. "Call me Ms. Jones. Just not Mrs. Lancaster."
Oliver's face showed his realization. "Oh, oh, right. You divorced Mr. Lancaster. Well, Ms. Jones? Is there any hope for my stone?"
I could tell he was anxious. Losing millions without a single return was enough to make anyone frantic.
"I'm not an expert in stone gambling," I admitted. "But if you really trust me, I'll take a look."
Oliver's face was a mask of misery. "It's already a disaster. The worst you can do is tie with me. If I don't make this last cut, I have to throw it away. I spent millions, my entire net worth is tied up in this. Even I can't be that wasteful. My old man will kill me when I get home, and I'll have to get married."
"But if I cut it and there's still nothing, not only do I have to get married, I'll be completely humiliated. Please, just take a look so I know what to expect."
Ryan couldn't hold back a laugh.
Perhaps the incident with the antique painting had led Oliver to have some blind faith in me. Seeing me now, he clearly saw me as his savior. Since things couldn't get any worse, I bent down to take a look.
The stone was large, even after two cuts. Its surface was dark and uneven. I shone a flashlight on it and saw many fine patterns and some black stone moss.
"From my limited knowledge, I'd say it should show some jade. As for what quality of it, that's the gamble."
After all, I didn't have X-ray vision. I could only rely on my intuition and knowledge. Besides, he'd already made two cuts; what was one more?
