"We've never met Mr. Lancaster, but his project manager visited our school during our alma mater's 100th anniversary for recruitment and to make a donation. A lot of us, directly or indirectly, work for companies under Aether Studio. Even those of us who don't, if our families have any decent standing, we can't afford to go against Aether Studio. In fact, we should be trying to build connections with them."
"Besides, some of us are married with kids who need to get into good schools. What good would it do us to offend a man like that? Zephyra, do you understand what I'm saying?"
I understood.
Steven was born lucky, with a massive family enterprise. In our class, my family was considered well-off, but we were nobodies compared to the Lancasters. We'd be crushed without a second thought.
Even with my grandfather's family, I wasn't sure we could go head-to-head with the Lancasters.
Their families were far more ordinary than mine. I understood their fear, so I didn't press them further.
My heart felt heavy as I hung up the phone. Just as I did, another call came in.
Seeing it was Rachel, I immediately answered, "Rachel."
Rachel's voice was as steady as she could make it, but she couldn't completely hide the sob catching in her throat.
"Zephyra, can... can you lend me some money? My family's in trouble. My dad's business lost over three hundred thousand dollars. I've already put up all my savings and mortgaged our house and everything, but we're still... still short over a hundred thousand..."
"I have it. I'll transfer you two hundred thousand right now," I said, immediately sending her the money. Rachel was so grateful she was on the verge of tears. "Zephyra, what would I do without you?"
I was still in shock. "Your dad is in business? I thought he was a head chef. What happened?"
Rachel's family was of modest means. Her mother had died during childbirth from hemorrhaging. Her father was the head chef at a hotel with a respectable salary. He was an honest, hardworking man. I thought Mr. Zade would work there until he retired; business deals seemed completely out of his league.
Rachel's voice trembled, clearly filled with anger.
