Gordon tried to persuade him. “Courting someone isn’t like closing a business deal. Some things are allowed to be outside of your control. Trying to manage every detail might give you a sense of security, but you could lose her heart in the process, and I don't think that's what you want. As long as her heart is yours, she can’t truly escape you.”
“I’ve already waited for her for too many years. I can’t wait any longer. She must come back to me, and soon,” Steven said, his eyes lowered, the lines of his profile sharp and handsome. “The Lopez family… If she’s still entangled with Horace, just handle it. I don’t care about the process, I only want results.”
“Many years?” Gordon was completely baffled, unable to make sense of that phrase. Mr. Lancaster’s words were growing stranger by the day. Seeing the dark expression on Steven’s face, but also his willingness to compromise, Gordon immediately agreed. “Of course, Mr. Lancaster.”
“Look into Rachel. Get back to me as soon as possible.”
…
For some reason, I was dreaming of my past life again.
I dreamed of the time Steven went abroad. I was sitting on the sofa in the villa, bored and lonely. There was a hot dinner and a small cake on the table, but I had no appetite. The television played on its own, but I didn't watch a single moment of it, constantly refreshing my phone, waiting for a message from him.
I tracked his flight status obsessively, needing to know he had landed safely. I couldn’t rest until I heard from him. But even after his flight landed, he remained silent.
I called him, and he rejected it. I didn’t dare disturb him again, terrified of making him angry. I forced myself to wait until the middle of the night. The food grew cold, and my mind ran wild with exaggerated fears, even imagining he’d been mugged. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and messaged Gordon.
Gordon told me Steven had gone straight into a business meeting after landing and was likely asleep at his hotel now.
Steven had a sensitive stomach, and I had always reminded him to avoid alcohol. Not only had he been drinking, but he had ignored me for nearly two days. My spirits sank as I bit my lip, staring at the cold meal on the table.
