I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 486

Verna?

I raised my eyebrows, genuinely surprised. The name was unexpected, and I was highly skeptical. I couldn't have pulled off something like that myself. Setting such a trap required time and effort. I didn't believe Verna, a former medical student turned rookie secretary, had that kind of cunning or patience.

“A medical student, even with a bit of a mean streak, is capable of setting a trap like a seasoned businessman? Even if she had the brains, she’s a poor student who needed financial aid. Without money or connections, how could she have managed it?”

“Steven, you’re a coward for not admitting what you did. Blaming it on a woman is just pathetic.”

Gordon didn’t dare speak, though he looked like he wanted to, his face full of sympathy for Steven.

Steven glanced at me sideways with a cold smile. “It seems no matter what, the blame will land on me.”

I scoffed. “If you really want to clear your name, it’s not impossible. I remember Verna has adoptive parents, right? An eye for an eye. If you can make Verna’s family end up in massive debt, in the same situation as Rachel’s father, then I’ll believe you two aren’t in cahoots.”

I was really saying it for my own benefit. Verna was the apple of Steven’s eye; he would never hurt her. I wanted revenge on Steven, but since a culprit had been named, the responsible party should pay.

Whoever hurt my friend had to face the consequences!

Steven stared into my eyes, his deep voice responding, “Alright.”

My pupils shrank in utter astonishment. “You agree?”

I was asking him to go after Verna!

Steven didn’t answer me, instead turning to Gordon. “You heard my wife. Do as she says.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll get on it right away,” Gordon replied without hesitation. He then added gently, “Mr. Lancaster, please review the contract as soon as you can. Hugh is in a bit of a mess. It seems some of his relatives are causing trouble and holding things up. It would be best if you called or met with him. Since you’re resting today, I won’t disturb you any further. Call me if you need anything.”

Gordon left so quickly I didn't have a chance to try and get his room key. Steven’s handsome face was unreadable as he glanced at me. “Sit tight. I have to take care of some work.”

With that, he lowered his head to read the contract and started typing on his laptop.

I was still dumbfounded, but then it occurred to me that Steven must be putting on an act for me.

I could believe Steven would stand up for his own reputation against anyone else, but Verna was the one person he would never bring himself to harm.

I glanced at his laptop. It was brand new. I had smashed his old one, so he must have bought a replacement.

Feeling no remorse, I picked up his phone. “I want coffee. Order me some.”

Steven replied, “The phone’s in your hand. Order it yourself.”

Without another word, I placed several orders, all using his one-click payment.
