Steven took a drag from his cigarette, the smoke curling around him as he stared into the distance, not looking at the person who had just spoken.
His head was splitting, as if it might explode, and his heart ached with a thousand tiny needles.
Seeing his desolate expression, as if he were truly hurt, Verna, sitting in her wheelchair, gave a cold smile. She had scrubbed herself clean several times to make sure there was no lingering smell, and had the dressing on her tortured leg changed.
She had tried calling Steven, but he didn't answer. Today's humiliation had to be made known to him!
So she had come down, just in time to witness the fight between Steven and Horace.
Seeing Steven’s defeated state, she scoffed mockingly.
“Mr. Lancaster, I told you Zephyra has memories of her past life. She only remembers what Horace did for her. Where do you even rank? Besides, they were meant to be a couple. You were the one who forced yourself into the wrong role. It’s perfectly reasonable for her to protect Horace and curse you. There’s no need to be heartbroken, Mr. Lancaster.”
Steven looked up at her, the pale smoke drifting across his face. He flicked the ash from his cigarette and said coolly, “Need a reminder of how that ended for you?”
Verna’s face stiffened, but she quickly recovered. “Why threaten me? You know it too, don’t you? You can never have her. Otherwise, why would you hide the fact that you also have your memories from her?”
“Because you know she stopped loving you long ago. As long as you don't have memories of the past, she might still see you as this life’s Steven. Since many things haven't happened yet, there might still be a chance for you two. But if you become the Steven from the past—”
“If you are the Steven who destroyed Zephyra’s family, who watched her attempt suicide to win you back without a care in the world, who tormented her until she ended up in the hospital, who let her die a miserable death alone while getting engaged to me and living happily ever after—Mr. Lancaster, you could have another lifetime and you’d never be able to redeem yourself.”
Steven suddenly crushed the cigarette between his fingers, the medication finally dulling his pain.
He shot her a cold glance. “I have countless ways to make someone’s life a living hell. If you dare let her know anything she shouldn't, I will deal with you myself.”
