I turned my attention back to Mrs. Lancaster. I was focused on dealing with Steven and had no patience for his annoying mother, so I tried to hold back.
“Rest assured, I’m not pregnant. As for Steven’s second marriage… he can marry whomever you like. You don’t need to inform me. We’re strangers who should avoid each other at all costs. Can we just pretend we’re mute when we cross paths?”
Mrs. Lancaster snorted. “You don’t look pregnant anyway!”
Megan frowned at me, looking puzzled, but then said, “Mr. Lancaster has such a strong personality. I doubt anyone can make decisions about his marriage for him.”
Mrs. Lancaster shot her a glare. “Shut up. Was I talking to you?”
Antonia glanced at her disdainfully. “Steven’s marriage is for Mrs. Lancaster to decide! Who do you think you are? If this doesn’t concern you, then keep your mouth shut.”
Megan laughed in disbelief. “I may be an outsider, but Mr. Lancaster went to great lengths to win Zephyra back. You two are running around slandering him and upsetting Zephyra. I don’t think Mr. Lancaster will let you off the hook when he finds out.”
Antonia’s expression changed, her eyes filling with even more jealousy as she looked at me. Mrs. Lancaster was even more agitated. “My son has been completely bewitched by her, it’s true! But once he gets to know the granddaughter of the Lopez family and spends some time with Antonia, he won’t give this country bumpkin a second glance!”
My eyebrows shot up. Mrs. Lancaster had mentioned before that she had her eye on the Lopez family’s granddaughter for Steven and was even planning to propose a marriage alliance. I’d found it hilarious at the time since I was standing right in front of her as she said it. She did try to make a formal proposal, but my grandfather sent her away with a swollen face.
I thought the matter was settled. Now she had her sights on Antonia, but she was still set on the Lopez family’s granddaughter.
That could only mean one thing.
I looked at Antonia. “You’re the Lopez family’s granddaughter?”
Antonia swallowed nervously. “My mother is a daughter of the Lopez family, so of course, I’m their granddaughter!”
I swung my hand and slapped her across the face.
Antonia was stunned and furious, but my gaze was venomous. “Let me warn you. Your mother cut all ties with the Lopez family years ago. Neither of you deserves to be associated with them. If I ever hear you using the Lopez name to get by again, I’ll break your legs.”
Her mother was the reason my mother died. Antonia and her mother were sinners! I would never allow them to have any connection to the Lopez family again!
Antonia’s face paled, and she seemed too scared to challenge me.
