Horace’s gaze felt like it could burn me. I was touched, but my heart wasn't moved. My brows knitted together as I slowly pulled my hand away.
“I’ve told you before, I would have married you not out of love, but out of an attempt to make you happy. But I've thought about it carefully these past few days, and I simply can't let go of my grievances with Steven.”
“My history with him runs too deep. There’s no room left for you. How could someone like me deserve your sincere affection? If we force ourselves to be together, you might never be happy. I can’t gamble with your entire life.”
“Horace, you deserve better. Let’s… just be friends, okay? As friends, we can last forever. I will always be your staunchest supporter, loyal and unswerving. I’d go to the ends of the earth for you.”
If I hadn't known Steven was reborn, I would never have realized how much I couldn't let go of my resentment towards him. I thought I just didn't love him anymore, but with the slightest provocation, all my hatred and bitterness came rushing back.
Even without Steven’s interference, Horace and I were never meant to be. Forcing it would only bring pain to both of us.
Horace looked at me, the smile gone from his handsome face. His lips were pressed into a thin line, and his eyes held a touch of self-mockery.
“Is Steven still in your heart?”
I looked at him, my tone firm. “He is in the past, a target for my revenge. Him ending up in jail this time was my doing. We are getting a divorce, and there’s no going back for us. But there’s also no future for you and me.”
A thin veil of darkness suddenly passed over Horace’s dark eyes. “What did you do to him?”
I considered for a moment and told him the truth about the overseas project and the bid. Then I added, “We’re still young, and our lives are full of possibilities. My goal has always been to build my career. Love, to me, is superfluous.”
“Steven insisted on blocking my path, so I took him down.”
