I was genuinely furious, holding back the urge to laugh like a madwoman. “Maybe we operate on different levels. The villains I know might go crazy, but they’re not stupid. And you know what? I don’t like saving the world. If you like dying so much, go slit your own throat.”
With that, I turned to leave.
Verna, infuriated, shouted after me.
“Zephyra, you’re the one who has wronged Mr. Lancaster! You’ve brought ruin to the man who loves you so deeply, and now you don't even care if he lives or dies! You are so selfish!”
I paid her no mind and walked straight toward Rachel Zade.
I’d learned my lesson in my past life: no man is worth giving up everything for.
When I made love my entire world, who else was there to lose but me?
And now she wanted to brainwash me into sacrificing myself for love? Ha, not happening.
Seeing me walk away, Verna’s usually stubborn eyes turned scarlet with murderous intent. Out of my earshot, she cursed viciously.
“Zephyra! If you don’t die, how am I supposed to live?!”
“What a heartless woman! If Steven dies, won't you feel any regret?!”
I heard nothing. As I reached the car, Rachel came to meet me, her eyes filled with worry. “Zephyra, did you two have a fight?”
I just looked at her. “Are you in contact with Verna?”
Rachel’s expression changed instantly. She forced a smile. “No, of course not. Why would you ask that?”
I glanced down at her hand, unconsciously clutching her clothes, then looked back at her face.
A light, steady rain began to fall.
It felt like something was tearing apart inside my head, a sharp, piercing pain, but my voice was eerily calm. “Rachel, don't lie to me. This isn't the way to Haven Medical Center.”
