I looked at the pastries in the display case. “Can I try?”
The chubby owner happily agreed. David, disgusted by his friend’s pathetic display, kicked him again and whispered.
“She’s a blind date my mom set me up with, not someone looking for a job. You need to find a way to give her a hard time!”
The owner just listened, but he didn’t deliberately make things difficult for me. In fact, he was very kind.
For some reason, this seemed to annoy David. He made a few snide remarks, then called over the staff from the neighboring shops, announcing that the owner had hired a fantastic future employee who was a master pastry chef. He declared he would buy everyone a pastry that I made.
There were seven or eight people in the crowd, including the owner.
David thought this would pressure me, and he stood beside me, making comments.
“She doesn’t look very skilled to me. Is she really that good?”
The onlookers were all amateurs and chimed in. “Yeah, if she were that good, why wouldn’t she open her own shop? Talented people open their own businesses.”
“So she’s just for show, no real skill. Are these pastries even going to be good? If they’re not, we should just return them.”
The negative comments kept coming, but I remained calm and composed. I don’t know why, but even without my memories, the moment I touched the flour, I knew exactly what to do next.
I made the dough and the filling from scratch. I even knew exactly how many minutes the pastries needed in the oven to achieve the most fragrant, crispy result.
When they were done, the sweet aroma of the pastries filled the air.
Everyone’s mouth was watering. David looked on in disbelief, but he remained stubborn. “No way. She can’t possibly know how to make pastries. I heard she just sits around at home waiting to be fed! Do you really believe a pampered woman like her can cook?”
The owner ignored him and took a bite of an avocado pastry. His eyes instantly lit up.
“Delicious! So delicious! It’s sweet but not heavy, and the avocado flavor is so fresh. I didn’t see what you did during that step. What else did you add? I can never get my pastries to taste this rich.”
I answered earnestly, “Avocado can be a bit rich, so I added about a spoonful of lemon juice mixed with the sugar. It really brings out the avocado’s fragrance.”
