I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 638

I was completely unaware of the argument happening upstairs.

The landlady had caught the mouse and was sincerely apologizing, even offering to refund my rent. I figured I’d be staying for another couple of days, so I turned down the money and instead asked for two days of home-cooked meals—anything that suited my tastes, even a simple bowl of noodle soup with an egg would be fine.

Steven wanted to cut ties and for me to stay away from him. Perhaps we’d slept together before, and now he just wasn’t interested. He had come all this way to find me, paid my rent, and was even using his resources to help me discover my identity; I couldn't bring myself to sponge off him for meals anymore.

The landlady was delighted and readily agreed.

She even praised me for being so kindhearted. My eyes lit up. Gordon kept saying I used to be a bad person, and Steven also seemed to dislike my past self, but the landlady was praising me!

I was thrilled.

The landlady wanted to decorate a blank wall, and without a second thought, I offered to help.

For some reason, I was surprisingly good at it. I drew three posters in a row, leaving the landlady gaping in amazement, her eyes shining.

“Dear girl, what did you do before? These drawings are fantastic! My son is studying design, and that damn kid can sit there for half a day and not squeeze out a single idea. You just whipped up three! I can't explain why, but every single one is beautiful. You're amazing!”

It wasn't just the landlady; some of the other tenants took a look and praised my posters too, especially my bold and unusual color choices.

Lost in their praise, I beamed even brighter. “Really? I was just a housewife.”

Everyone thought I was being modest, which made them like me even more. Knowing I had an appetite, the landlady brought out some fruit and started feeding me, saying that if I weren't already married, she would have definitely introduced me to her son.

A little while later, David returned. The landlady eagerly asked about his interview, but he just shook his head dejectedly.

She sighed and started lecturing him about changing careers, then praised me again, saying he wasn't even as good as I was. I immediately sensed trouble, and sure enough, I saw David glaring at me through gritted teeth.

But instead of getting angry, he placed the helmet he was carrying in front of me and plopped down into a seat.

“You know, my interviewer said that if I had worn a blue or green tie, my whole outfit would have really stood out. For that alone, they might have considered me for a second round. But I didn't. They said not only was my attire unremarkable, but the proposal I’d spent days on lacked any creativity. They told me to find a different line of work.”

David grew more agitated as he spoke, looking at me. “And you! A housewife! A stay-at-home wife! How could you have said the exact same thing as my interviewer? And I didn't believe you… All those years of school, and I’m not even as good as you! Why is this happening? Just kill me!”

His voice was a mix of intense jealousy, envy, excitement, and utter defeat.
