I was baffled. Didn't he want me to keep my distance? Why was he holding my hand, and in such an intimate way?
As we went downstairs, the landlady teased, “Ah, young love is so sweet. Can’t even go out without holding hands.”
I gave a weak smile. It was just Steven acting strangely again; it had nothing to do with being sweet.
Steven, however, remained perfectly composed.
Gordon pulled the car around, not at all surprised by Steven’s change in behavior, a wide smile on his face.
Weird.
I wondered if Steven and Gordon were acting so strangely because there was a chance I might regain my memory.
It was a bit late to pretend to be a loving couple now, wasn't it?
But what the medical report revealed was even more shocking.
“You mean,” I said in disbelief, “I lost my memory because some kind of medication damaged my brain?”
The doctor explained, “You fell from an overpass into the sea. I’m not sure how you avoided major injury, but your body is remarkably unharmed. Your amnesia isn’t due to head trauma.”
“However, your bloodwork shows several abnormalities, which are clearly drug-induced. Because it’s been some time, most of it has been metabolized, so we can’t identify the specific substance. But I suspect the drug affects neurological function, causing memory impairment, which is your current condition.”
“If it was caused by a drug, your body must have had some specific reactions. We can’t know what happened before the memory loss, but have you felt unwell these past two days?”
My face grew serious. “No, I’ve been fine, aside from fainting once due to low blood sugar.”
The doctor said, “If you’re not experiencing any other physical symptoms, I suggest Mr. Lancaster consult a neurologist. But based on this report, medication is the most likely cause.”
Steven looked down at the report, his handsome face a mask of stone, but his voice was chilling.
“Can she ever get her memory back?”
